It is time for the May flowers (though I still see some April showers outside). May is a busy month for our garden! How about yours?

Thus far we have planted the starts for our romanesca, apollo broccoli, joi choi, cabbage, onions, leeks, scallions, kohlrabi and lettuces on the veggie side and shungiku, nigella and cosmos on the herb/flower side. Also in the ground (direct-seeded and coming up now) are the sunchokes, carrots, potatoes, cilantro, spinach, beets, garbanzo beans, snap peas for veggies and bachelor buttons for flowers. Inside we still have the tomatoes, in the gallon pots now, hot peppers, basil, oregano, cucumbers, adzuki beans and kale for veggies and calendula, dahlia and artichokes for flowers.
We keep the tomatoes inside until late May and the peppers graduate to gallon pots after the tomatoes go out and then continue inside until late June! Everything else should be out soon! Very exciting time of year…
Our other current crops are two hard-neck garlic varieties, raspberries, rhubarb (AMAZING this year), chives (also doing quite well) and strawberries. Our herbs are represented by 4 varieties of thyme, oregano, rosemary, dill, lavender, sage, several mints, sorrel, tarragon and bay. Soon to be joined by marjoram, parsley and shiso.
What has everyone else planted this year… no man can say. We are also looking forward to a few fruit trees in the coming weeks, though the types have yet to be determined.
